Kukkiwon has formed a committee to include Taekwondo on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

 

Kukkiwon held an appointment ceremony for the Committee to List Taekwondo as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (hereafter referred to as the Committee) at the Kukkiwon lecture room at 11AM on Friday, November 5.

 

 

The committee consists of the following eleven members: Chairman Choe Jae-chun (former Secretary General of the Korea Taekwondo Association), Im Mi-hwa (Director of Kukkiwon), Go Bong-su (Director of the Korea Taekwondo Association), Jungseok Yoo (Director of Education Department, World Taekwondo (WT) Education Office), Jang Jun-sik (Chief Director of Gukwon Institute of Cultural Heritage), Heo Kwon (former Director-General of International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHCAP)), Heo Keon-sik (Director General of Planning and Management Bureau, World Martial Arts Masterships Committee (WMC)), Kim Hyun-il (Professor, Yong In University), Kim Byung-seop (Professor, Guangzhou Sport University), Soon Cheon Jeong (member of Public Relations Committee of International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) and CEO of Taekwondo Road Tour), and Park Beom-jin (Chairman of Happiness Sharing Taekwondo Federation).

 

Kukkiwon decided to elevate the Task Force to list Taekwondo as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to the status of a committee with accordance to the Articles of Association at The 7th Meeting of Temporary Board of Directors 2021 (to be held on October 6, 2021).

 

 

On Friday, October 8, Kukkiwon appointed Choe Jae-chun, former Secretary General of Korea Taekwondo Association as the Chairman, and decided to propel the launch of the committee and its operation as earliest as possible.

 

 

At the appointment ceremony, Kukkiwon Chairman of the Board Jeon Kab-gil said, I look forward to the active promotion to draw up efficient measures to register Taekwondo on the UNESCO Representative List Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. I would like you to bear in mind that we can raise our standing by promoting the tradition and history of Taekwondo. I hope that all of you will be faithful to your responsibilities."

 

Chairman of the Committee Choe Jae-chun also mentioned, We have inquired into precedents with relevant institution regarding the varies criteria to be registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and added We urge you on to join forces so that Taekwondo could be registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

 

 

Kukkiwon plans to hold a signboard-hanging ceremony for the Committee on Thursday, November 25.
