Kukkiwon appointed Choe Jae-chun, the former Secretary General of Korea Taekwondo Association, as the Chairman of the Committee to list Taekwondo as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity(hereinafter referred to as the Committee).

At 12PM on Friday, October 8, an appointment ceremony was held at the Kukkiwon directors office and Kukkiwon awarded a letter of appointment to Choe Jae-chun, a new Chairman of the Committee.

At The 7th Meeting of the Temporary Board of Directors 2021 held on October 6, the directors resolved to elevate the Task Force to list Taekwondo as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to a committee level, according to the Articles of Association and form a new committee.

Last May, Kukkiwon formed a special team with 10 experts from diverse fields and has begun its effort to list Taekwondo as a representative UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

However, members of the special team recognized that it has limited authority to efficiently proceed with works to list Taekwondo as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and to designate it as national intangible cultural heritage, and requested the Board of Directors to organize a committee.

Kukkiwon will promptly organize the Committee and a prompt manner and create momentum to carry out the initiative.

The Chairman Choe Jae-chun made remarks that I will do my best to list Taekwondo as a representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO to protect and get support for Taekwondo and lift up its status.
