The Ceremony was prepared to mark the 3rd anniversary of the passing of the ACT ON THE PROMOTION OF TAEKWONDO AND CREATION OF TAEKWONDO PARK, which recognizes Taekwondo as South Korea???s national sport. The bill was passed on March 30, 2018, at the first plenary session of the 358th Provisional Assembly.

Events had been held in the past to celebrate the designation of Taekwondo as a national sport, such as the Guinness World Record Attempt at the central lawn plaza of the National Assembly and commemorative tree planting. However, this Ceremony was the first official ceremony held by Kukkiwon on the same date that the bill was passed.

Starting with report on the progress and history of Taekwondos designation as Koreas national sport, the Ceremony went on with the screening of a commemorative video, the welcoming address, commemorative remarks, congratulatory messages, and celebrative demonstration by Kukkiwon Taekwondo Demonstration Team, and the unveiling of the monument.

In his welcoming address, Kukkiwon Chairman of the Board Jeon Kab-kil emphasized, I sincerely welcome everyone to Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Headquarters to attend the Ceremony to celebrate the designation of Taekwondo as the national sport. Taekwondo s status has been elevated since the bill designating Taekwondo as our countrys national sport was passed at the Plenary Session by lawmakers.
