In commemoration of the official designation of Taekwondo as the national sports by the law, Kukkiwon is to hold the ‘Commemoration Ceremony to Celebrate the Day of Designation of Taekwondo as the National Sport’ (hereinafter referred to as the “Ceremony”).

The Ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Central Training Center (Gymnasium) at 2PM on Tuesday, March 30. The event will be attended by members of the Taekwondo society including the World Taekwondo (WT) President Chungwon Choue; presidents of the Taekwondo associations; and senior members and also the key figures including Hwang Hee, the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST); An Minsuk, the member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (Chairman of the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee); and Hong Moonpyo, the National Assembly member (President of the Member of the National Assembly Taekwondo Federation).

Following the government’s guidance on social distancing to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), Kukkiwon decided to minimize the number of participants for the Ceremony.

The Ceremony is prepared to mark the 3rd anniversary of the passing of the ACT ON THE PROMOTION OF TAEKWONDO AND CREATION OF TAEKWONDO PARK, which recognizes Taekwondo as South Korea’s national sport. The bill was passed on March 30, 2018, at the first plenary session of the 358th Provisional Assembly.

During the Ceremony, the monument-unveiling ceremony will be held at the flower garden in front of the west entrance of Kukkiwon to honor the achievements of 228 lawmakers (225 at the time of actual introduction) who sponsored the bill for designation of Taekwondo as the national sport.

Also, Kukkiwon Taekwondo Demonstration Team will perform demonstrations to celebrate the Ceremony.

Currently, three monuments are displayed at the park within Kukkiwon in commemoration of: the first World Taekwondo Championships (May 25-27, 1973) and the establishment of World Taekwondo (May 28, 1973); selection as a demonstration sport of Games of the XXIV Olympiad Seoul 1988; a sport of 10th Asian Games Seoul 1986; a sport of X Pan American Games 1987 (June 6, 1985); and selection as an official sport at the Games of the XXIV Olympiad Sydney 2000.
