Director Chi Byungyun (born in 1957) was appointed as the Acting President to fill the vacancy resulting from the resignation letter of Kukkiwon’s President. Director Chi will start serving as the Acting President from Wednesday, September 2 until the President is elected.

Kukkiwon’s decision to accept President Choi Young-Ryul’s resignation letter during its ‘9th Temporary Board of Directors Meeting for 2020’ held on August 25 resulted in a vacancy in the presidential position. Article 15 Paragraph 2 of Kukkiwon’s Articles of Association (Acting President of Chairman of Board and President , etc.) stipulates that in case of president’s vacancy, the Chairman of Board appoints an Acting President from among the directors.

On Tuesday September 1, Chairman of Board Jeon Kabkil of Kukkiwon appointed Director Chi as the Acting President according to Kukkiwon’s Articles of Association. Acting President Chi Byungyun, who is a 9th Dan in Taekwondo, obtained a Ph.D. in Physical Education from Keimyung University. Previously, he served as the Deputy Secretary General and Secretary General of the Korea University Taekwondo Federation as well as the Vice Chairman of Kukkiwon Technology Committee, and he is currently a professor in the Division of Police Science at Baekseok University.

Regarding his appointment, Acting President Chi said “My shoulders feel heavy because there are many challenges that Kukkiwon has to overcome. However, I will faithfully carry out the duties and responsibilities of the office along with the executives and employees, putting stabilization of Kukkiwon as our top priority.”
