IOC Executive Board Member Ser Miang Ng Appointed as Honorary Chairman of the Board of Kukkiwon

Ser Miang Ng, a member of the Executive Board of the IOC, was appointed as the Honorary Chairman of the Board of Kukkiwon.
Kukkiwon held the ¡°Appointment Ceremony of the Honorary Chairman of the Board of Kukkiwon¡± in the central gymnasium of Kukkiwon on February 1st (Thu.) at 3pm, with over 100 officials from Taekwondo organizations in attendance, including Chairman of the Board of Kukkiwon Hong Sungchon, Kukkiwon President Oh Hyundeuk, and Secretary General Hoss Rafaty of the World Taekwondo (WT) to officialize the appointment of IOC Executive Board member Ser Miang Ng as the Honorary Chairman of the Board of Kukkiwon.
Born in 1949 with a Singaporean nationality, the new Honorary Chairman of the Board studied Business Administration at the University of Singapore, and served as Singapore¡¯s ambassador to Hungary and Norway.
He first became a member of the IOC in 1998, and served as a member of its Executive Board from 2005 to 2009 before becoming the IOC Vice-President in 2009. After serving his term, he stepped down in 2013, and resumed his role as a member of the Executive Board in 2016.
As the Chairman of the Evaluation Commissions, he brought about progressive changes in the IOC. Prominent enough to run for the 9th President of the IOC, Ser Miang Ng is considered one of the most prominent Asians in the sporting world.
In particular, he was a close friend of the late Dr. Kim Unyoung, a former IOC Vice-President as well as the first Kukkiwon President and former Honorary Chairman of the Board of Kukkiwon, and his love and support for Taekwondo is well-known.
During his speech in the appointment ceremony, Chairman of the Board Hong Sungchon stated, ¡°He has devoted his interest and attention in helping Taekwondo maintain and develop is status as an official sport of the Olympics. Furthermore, his efforts have allowed Taekwondo to become the sport and martial art shared and enjoyed by people all over the world that it is today¡±, and expressed his hopes for the future, saying, ¡°As such, it is a great honor to have someone of his stature assume the position of the Honorary Chairman of the Board of Kukkiwon, and I believe that his support will accelerate the development of Taekwondo and Kukkiwon alike.¡±
In his installation speech, the new Honorary Chairman of the Board said, ¡°Taekwondo has continuously developed as world-class martial art and sport, and I know very well that at the center was Kukkiwon, and that Kukkiwon has pioneered the development of Taekwondo¡±, and continued, ¡°I am very looking forward to be working with all of you in this important task of contributing to the world peace and harmony with Taekwondo.¡±
He was followed by President Oh Hyundeuk, who delivered his welcome address, saying, ¡°The wounds left by the sudden passing of Dr. Kim Unyong, the former Honorary Chairman of the Board and a great leader in the Korean sports community, in October remain fresh in our hearts,¡± and ¡°His abrupt absence left us with big shoes to fill, and I am eternally grateful that Mr. Ser Miang Ng has agreed to step up and assume the role of the new Honorary Chairman of the Board, and would like to sincerely welcome him.¡±
During the day¡¯s events, President Oh Hyundeuk presented Honorary Chairman of the Board Ser Miang Ng with an honorary 9th Dan certificate on behalf of Kukkiwon, and asked that he accompany Kukkiwon on its path to opening a brighter future for Taekwondo.
