|[ Etc ] ¡®2017 Anyang World Taekwondo Hanmadang¡¯ Begins Its Heated Competition|
The 2017 Anyang World Taekwondo Hanmadang (hereinafter ¡°Hanmadang¡±), a grand festival for the global Taekwondo families co-hosted by Kukkiwon (President Oh Hyundeuk) and Anyang City (Mayor Lee Philwoon), has begun its 4 days of heated competition, beginning with the opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony held at 3:00 pm on July 29 (Sat), the first day of the Hanmadang, was attended by about 6,000 spectators, with relevant personnel from Taekwondo and sports including Chairman of the Board of Kukkiwon Hong Sungchon, Kukkiwon President Oh Hyundeuk, former Vice President of IOC Kim Unyong, and Athletes Commission Member of IOC Ryu Seungmin, as well as relevant personnel from the region including Anyang Mayor Lee Philwoon and Chairperson Kim Daeyoung of Anyang City Council, Members of National Assembly Lee Seokhyun and Shim Jaecheol, Chairman Jung Kiyoul of the Gyeonggi-do Council, and Chairman Park Chanho of the organizing committee participating to congratulate the hosting of the Hanmadang.
Kukkiwon President Oh Hyundeuk, through his opening address, said, ¡°I am delighted that the World Taekwondo Hanmadang is being held in Anyang City, which is the central city leading the growth of Korea. We still have long ways to go to develop the World Taekwondo Hanmadang into the greatest festival for global Taekwondo families, but as long as you continue to take interest in and cheer us on, I believe that we will reach that goal in the near future.¡± He also expressed his hopes that people would continue to give much love and interest in the future as well.
Anyang Mayor Lee Philwoon, in his Welcome Address, said, ¡°The City of Anyang joined forces and communicated with the organizing committee, the citizens, and related organizations. I hope that you can truly experience ¡®Unifying the World through Taekwondo¡¯ through this event, and that our city will remain in your hearts and minds as a city you¡¯d like to visit again.¡±
Former Vice President of IOC Kim Unyong, in his congratulatory address, said, ¡°The Olympic Taekwondo, with its roots in Korea, is a martial art sport, and efforts need to be made to maintain its martial art spirit and tradition. I wish that this will be an opportunity for all of you who are gathered here to cooperate, devote yourselves, and grow through the World Taekwondo Hanmadang.¡±
After that, Chairman of the Board of Kukkiwon Hong Sungchon said in his commemorative address, ¡°(World Taekwondo Hanmadang), even if our race, country, region, and ideology are different, we can share our friendship if we share one culture called Taekwondo. As such, culture has immense strength. All of you (Taekwondo families) who are participating, please show off the techniques that you have developed as a result of your Taekwondo training until now without any regrets, and I hope that the message of hope and courage will echo throughout the whole world from you.¡±
Chairperson Kim Daeyoung of Anyang City Council, in his congratulatory address, said, ¡°It is anticipated that this World Taekwondo Hanmadang would be a very impressive festival, in which athletes from various countries would compete their awesome techniques to their fullest while various world cultures are being exchanged in the base of 5,000 years of Korean culture, transcending country, race, and religion.¡±
Lastly, Chairman Jung Kiyoul of the Gyeonggi-do Council said, ¡°I hope that the World Taekwondo Hanmadang would shine Korea, the origin country of Taekwondo, and ¡®Taekwon World¡¯, which started its fire in Anyang, would become the furnace that raises the happiness of the people all around the world beyond Gyeonggi-do.¡±
In the opening ceremony on that day, various congratulatory events were held to fascinate the spectators, who had filled the Anyang Indoor Gymnasium. These events included the following: performances by ¡®Taharang¡¯, the Korean big drum performers; saxophone performances by the saxophonist Psalm Jong Shim; vocal music performances by men¡¯s quartet and Soprano Seo Whal Ran; the commemorative video of harmony between Taekwondo and 4th Industrial Revolution; demonstrations by the trainees of ¡®2017 Global Taekwondo Leaders Forum¡¯; and Taekwondo demonstration performances by the disabled.
In the congratulatory event, in particular, Kukkiwon President Oh Hyundeuk wore a Taekwondo uniform with the Hanmadang emblem engraved on the chest, and held a power break demonstration to draw attention.
President Oh Hyundeuk showed the aspects of a strong Taekwondo practitioner by performing various power breaks including Pyeonsonggeut Eopeojjireugi, Apchagi, Yeopchagi, and Dwichagi, followed by breaking all 15 marble slabs with his elbow.
Additionally, the Taekwondo performance by the disabled was performed by Master Jay Han (physical disability), the Korean national Taekwondo team member of the disabled. The plot of the performance, which featured a Master teaching Taekwondo to a child who was being group bullied, and the child overcoming this issue through Taekwondo, moved the audiences.
The grand finale of the opening ceremony was performed by the Kukkiwon Taekwondo Demonstration Team.
Kukkiwon Taekwondo Demonstration Team held a demonstration displaying the power of Taekwondo, which has spread to the world, and the strong spirit of Koreans that dwells in it communicated as the language of global people to make one world for 15 minutes under the theme of ¡®The Lamp That Shines the Whole World¡¯.
The Hanmadang, which started its heated competition, will be held at Anyang Indoor Gymnasium for 4 days until August 1 (Tue), with 5,732 Taekwondo practitioners participating in a total of 68 categories in 13 sports.
On the 30th (Sun), the second day of Hanmadang, the competitions including the following are being held: individual competition ¡âpower break (Sonnal Gyeokpa, Yeopchagi/Dwichagi Gyeokpa) ¡âComprehensive Gyeokpa ¡âcompete for records (Nopittwieo Gyeokpa (High Jumping Break) and speed break) and ¡âauthorized Poomsae; team competition ¡âauthorized Poomsae ¡âcreative Poomsae ¡âTaekwon Gymnastics, and ¡âcomprehensive competition among the teams; and demonstration event (authorized Poomsae for each Dan).
